Overview
Knight-Hennessy Scholars funds graduate study in any of Stanford's seven schools — PhD, MBA, MD, JD or master's — and wraps it in a multidisciplinary leadership development programme housed at Denning House. The design is deliberate: scholars from every field study together on questions none of their degrees covers alone.
Applicants apply separately to Knight-Hennessy and to their Stanford graduate programme in the same cycle, and admission to both is required. Selection emphasises independence of thought, purposeful leadership and a civic orientation, evidenced concretely rather than rhetorically.
Eligibility
Stanford's university-wide graduate fellowship, open across every school — and unusual in funding any Stanford graduate degree rather than one field.
- Any citizenship, and open to applicants from any country including the United States.
- A bachelor's degree awarded within the window the programme specifies — generally the past few years, which effectively excludes those further into a career.
- Application to a full-time Stanford graduate programme — any of them, from MBA and MD to a doctorate or master's.
- Separate applications to both Knight-Hennessy and the degree programme, each with its own requirements.
- Selection on three criteria: independence of thought, purposeful leadership, and a civic mindset.
The recent-degree window is a genuine cut-off and is applied strictly. It is the first thing to check, because a strong candidate outside the window is not eligible however good the application would be.
What you get
A comprehensive fellowship, plus a leadership development programme that is a substantial part of what is on offer.
- Full tuition and fees for the Stanford graduate degree.
- A living stipend covering accommodation and expenses, at the rate the programme publishes.
- An academic travel and expenses allowance for conferences and research.
- Up to three years of funding — where a degree runs longer, the remaining years are funded by the school.
- The King Global Leadership Program — workshops, mentoring and study trips alongside the degree.
- Membership of a small, deliberately diverse cohort drawn from every school at Stanford.
The funding is capped at three years, so a longer doctorate needs the balance covered by the department. Confirming that with the department early avoids an unpleasant discovery in year four.
Documents you will need
Two separate applications, and the fellowship one is substantial in its own right.
- The Knight-Hennessy application — short-answer questions and essays on your leadership and purpose.
- Two video statements, recorded through the application system. Unusual, and worth preparing for properly.
- Two letters of recommendation for the fellowship, distinct from those for the degree.
- Transcripts for all higher education.
- A curriculum vitae, and standardised test scores where the degree programme requires them.
- The separate degree programme application, on its own timetable.
Recommenders for the fellowship should be able to speak to leadership and civic contribution rather than only to academic ability. Choosing the same referees as for the degree is usually a wasted opportunity.
How it works
Two applications with two deadlines, and the fellowship deadline usually comes first.
- Apply to Knight-Hennessy by its deadline, typically in the autumn.
- Apply separately to the Stanford degree programme by that programme's own deadline.
- Fellowship review and shortlisting.
- Interviews, then a final immersive selection round for finalists.
- Awards confirmed, conditional on admission to the degree programme.
Dates move every cycle, so treat the Knight-Hennessy Scholars website and your Stanford programme's own page as the authority on them rather than any second-hand summary — including this one. We will confirm the current timeline with you before you commit to a plan built around it.

Frequently asked questions
Which degrees does it fund?
Any graduate degree at Stanford, across every school. That is unusual — most university awards are tied to one field.
It also means you are compared against outstanding applicants from every discipline rather than only your own.
Who can apply?
Any citizenship, and it is open to applicants across the university's graduate programmes.
You need a Stanford graduate application as well: the scholarship does not admit you.
What is the leadership programme?
Knight-Hennessy is a scholarship community with an integrated leadership programme attached, not simply a payment.
It is a genuine commitment of time alongside your degree, and applicants who want only the funding tend to read as a poor fit.
How competitive is it?
Extremely. It is a full award, at Stanford, open to the whole world and to every field.
Apply if it fits, and do not build your plan on it.
