PTE

The Pearson Test of English — a fully computer-based, automatically scored English test known for integrated tasks and fast results.

Overview

PTE Academic is a computer-delivered English test used for university admission and, in several countries, for visa and migration purposes. Everything is taken at a computer in a test centre, including the speaking section, which is recorded through a headset rather than delivered to a human examiner.

Scoring is automated. That makes results fast and consistent, and it also means the test rewards clear, well-paced delivery and precise task completion rather than rapport with an examiner. Candidates who find a live interview stressful often prefer this format; others find speaking to a machine harder, so it is worth trying a practice test before committing.

The test is integrated by design: one task may assess both listening and writing, or both reading and speaking. That is closer to real academic work than testing each skill in isolation, but it also means a weakness in one area can pull down a score that looks unrelated.

Exam format

PTE Academic is taken in one sitting at a computer, in three timed parts, preceded by a short unscored personal introduction.

  • Speaking and Writing — the longest part, combining read aloud, repeat sentence, describe image and retell lecture with summarise written text and an essay.
  • Reading — multiple choice, reorder paragraphs and fill in the blanks, drawing on vocabulary and grammatical control as much as comprehension.
  • Listening — summarise spoken text, multiple choice, fill in the blanks, highlight incorrect words, write from dictation and similar tasks based on recorded audio.

Because the tasks are integrated, a single response can contribute to more than one skill score.

Scoring

PTE Academic reports on the Global Scale of English, which runs from 10 to 90.

  • An overall score between 10 and 90 is reported, alongside communicative skills scores for Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing on the same 10–90 scale.
  • Enabling skills — grammar, oral fluency, pronunciation, spelling, vocabulary and written discourse — are reported separately on some score reports and explain where marks were lost.
  • Scoring is fully automated, so results are usually available within a small number of days rather than weeks.

Institutions and visa authorities set their own minimum overall and per-skill scores, so check the requirement that applies to your specific course and destination.

Preparation tips

  • Practise on a computer with a headset from the beginning. Typing speed and microphone technique genuinely affect the score.
  • Never stop mid-task in the speaking sections. Hesitation and long pauses cost fluency marks, so keep going even after a mistake.
  • Speak at a steady, natural pace into the microphone, and start speaking promptly when the tone sounds — the recording does not wait.
  • Drill write-from-dictation and repeat-sentence tasks. They are heavily weighted through the enabling skills and improve quickly with practice.
  • Learn a reliable essay structure and use it, since the automated scoring rewards clear organisation and on-topic development.
  • Practise summarising a long passage in a single accurate sentence — a task type that catches out strong English speakers.
  • Take at least one full-length scored practice test under timed conditions before booking.

Frequently asked questions

Is PTE accepted everywhere IELTS is accepted?

Acceptance is broad but not identical. PTE Academic is accepted by a large number of universities and by several immigration authorities, but individual institutions and visa routes maintain their own approved lists.

Confirm acceptance with your specific institution and, separately, for your visa route before booking.

How is the speaking section scored without an examiner?

Your responses are recorded and assessed by an automated scoring system trained on large numbers of human-rated samples. It evaluates content, oral fluency and pronunciation.

In practice that means clarity, steady pacing and completing the task matter more than an accent, and long hesitations cost more than they would with a human listener.

How quickly do results arrive?

Because scoring is automated, results are typically available within a few days, which is one of the main reasons students choose PTE when working to a close admission deadline.

Exact turnaround varies, so leave a margin rather than planning to the last possible day.

How long is a PTE result valid?

Scores are generally treated as valid for two years, and institutions and immigration authorities apply that limit.

Check the rule that applies to your destination, since some visa routes apply a shorter validity window than universities do.
