Test preparation

CELPIP

The Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program — a fully computer-delivered test built around Canadian English, used mainly for Canadian immigration.

Overview

CELPIP is a Canadian English test delivered entirely on a computer in a single sitting. It is a designated test for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and is most commonly taken for permanent residence, citizenship and professional designation purposes.

Two versions exist. CELPIP-General tests all four skills and is the version used for permanent residence and most professional purposes. CELPIP-General LS tests only Listening and Speaking and is used for citizenship applications and a small number of designations.

The material is deliberately Canadian: Canadian accents, workplace situations, community notices and apartment listings rather than academic journals. Students should note that for university admission most Canadian institutions ask for IELTS, PTE or TOEFL rather than CELPIP, so check what your specific programme accepts before booking.

Exam format

All sections are completed in one sitting at a computer, with an on-screen timer for each task.

  • Listening — problem solving, daily-life conversations, information exchanges, news items and a viewpoints section, delivered in Canadian accents.
  • Reading — correspondence, diagrams, information passages and viewpoints, with a practical rather than academic emphasis.
  • Writing — two tasks: writing an email, and responding to a survey question with a reasoned choice.
  • Speaking — eight short recorded tasks including giving advice, describing a scene, making a prediction, comparing and persuading, dealing with a difficult situation and expressing an opinion.

Scoring

CELPIP reports each skill on a scale from 1 to 12. There are no half levels, and there is no averaged overall score.

  • A separate level is reported for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, and requirements are normally expressed as a minimum in each skill rather than an average.
  • CELPIP levels map directly onto the Canadian Language Benchmarks, which is how immigration programmes convert a result into points.
  • Levels at the upper end of the scale indicate advanced proficiency; the middle of the scale indicates adequate to good proficiency for everyday and workplace purposes.

Because one weak skill can decide an application on its own, prepare across all four rather than pushing an already strong one higher.

Preparation tips

  • Confirm which version you need — the full General test or the Listening and Speaking version — before booking.
  • Listen to Canadian news, podcasts and workplace conversations. Accent familiarity is a real and easily acquired advantage here.
  • Practise typing emails to time. The writing tasks are practical, and tone and register are assessed as well as accuracy.
  • Rehearse the eight speaking task types individually; each has its own structure and a short preparation window.
  • Work at a computer with a headset throughout, because the whole test is delivered that way.
  • Aim for a balanced profile — the minimum required level usually applies to every skill separately.

Frequently asked questions

Is CELPIP accepted for university admission?

Most Canadian universities and colleges ask for IELTS, PTE or TOEFL for admission, and CELPIP acceptance for academic entry is limited.

It is primarily an immigration and professional designation test. Always check what your specific programme lists before you book.

What is the difference between CELPIP-General and CELPIP-General LS?

CELPIP-General tests Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, and is the version used for permanent residence and most professional purposes.

CELPIP-General LS tests only Listening and Speaking, and is used for citizenship applications and a small number of designations.

Can CELPIP be taken outside Canada?

Test centres are concentrated in Canada, with a growing number of locations elsewhere and online delivery options in some regions.

Availability changes, so check the official test centre list for your country before planning around it.

How long is a CELPIP result valid?

Results are generally treated as valid for two years for immigration purposes.

Because immigration applications can take time, plan the test so the result is still valid at the point the application is assessed, not only when it is submitted.
