Overview

Kazan Federal University was founded in 1804 and is one of the oldest universities in Russia. It is based in Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan, and took its present federal form through a merger of institutions in the region.

Its faculties cover medicine, the natural sciences, mathematics, engineering, IT, economics, law and the humanities. Mathematics has a particular historical significance here, and the institute of fundamental medicine and biology teaches a large international student body.

English-medium general medicine is offered for international students, with Russian taught alongside for the clinical years. As elsewhere in the region, the clinical stage requires communicating with local patients in Russian.

Admission requirements

Requirements are stated by the international office and applied to the letter.

  • Completed Class 12 with physics, chemistry and biology for medical programmes, at the minimum marks the university requires.
  • Any eligibility or qualifying examination your own national regulator requires before studying medicine abroad.
  • Legalised and translated academic documents, commonly with apostille certification.
  • Evidence of English ability for English-medium programmes, at the level the university sets.
  • A medical certificate with the specified tests, and the documents needed for the official study invitation.

Confirm your home regulator's recognition and licensing requirements before applying, not afterwards.

Tuition fees

One of Russia's oldest universities, in a city with lower living costs than Moscow, and the same dual fee-or-quota structure.

  • Set per programme, published annually and generally below Moscow institutions.
  • Russian-taught and English-taught tracks priced separately.
  • Government quota places allocated through the national process, covering tuition.
  • A preparatory language year available and priced separately.
  • Kazan living costs are noticeably lower than Moscow, which is a real advantage over a full degree.
  • Additional costs — visa, registration, medical certificate and attestation.

Work from the university's international admissions pages for your programme for your specific programme and year of entry — it is the only figure that will be correct for you, and it is republished every year. We will confirm the current cost and what it includes before you commit to an application.

Scholarships

Kazan Federal participates in the government quota for international students and runs its own awards for those who perform well once enrolled. Preparatory-year places, where a student studies Russian before beginning a degree, may be funded on the same basis.

  • Government quota places — allocated through the official national process.
  • University awards — decided on results achieved during study.
  • Preparatory-year support — covering the language year ahead of the degree.

The national process runs to a fixed annual calendar and missing it means waiting a full cycle. Attested documents and a medical certificate take time to assemble.

Campus life

A historic university in Kazan, a Tatarstan city with a distinct culture and a substantially lower cost of living than the Russian capitals.

  • A historic central campus plus modern facilities, including a large university village built for an international sports event.
  • Good dormitory accommodation, inexpensive and available to international students.
  • A culturally distinctive city — Tatar and Russian traditions side by side, and a notable food culture.
  • A large student population across several institutions, which gives the city a young character.
  • Lower living costs than Moscow or St Petersburg, a meaningful factor over several years.
  • A significant international medical cohort, with established student networks.

Kazan is smaller and cheaper than Moscow while still being a substantial city. As elsewhere in Russia, some Russian will make daily life and administration considerably easier.
