Brisbane, Australia

University of Queensland

A research-intensive Queensland university with a riverside campus at St Lucia and a strong record in biomedical science.

Overview

UQ is best known outside Australia for biomedical research — the cervical cancer vaccine was developed here — and for agriculture and environmental science, which are taught with the Great Barrier Reef and the Queensland interior as field sites.

Brisbane is markedly cheaper to live in than Sydney, and the St Lucia campus is connected to the city by its own ferry stop.

BSc Hospitality and Tourism Management

A business degree applied to hotels, events, food service and travel, with industry placement built into the programme.

Typically 4 years in the US system

Undergraduate

BSc Nursing

A clinical degree combining biomedical science with extensive supervised placements, leading toward registration as a nurse.

Typically 4 years; 3 in some systems

Postgraduate

Master of Public Health (MPH)

The professional degree of population health: epidemiology, biostatistics, health systems and the policy craft of improving them.

1–2 years depending on country

Postgraduate

MSc Civil Engineering

A specialised master's in the engineering of infrastructure — structures, water, geotechnics and transport — usually chosen with a named specialisation.

1–2 years depending on country

Postgraduate

MSc Data Science

Statistics, machine learning and data engineering combined into the degree behind one of the decade's fastest-growing professions.

1–2 years depending on country

Postgraduate

Admission requirements

UQ assesses against the requirement for the individual programme, and the biomedical, agricultural and environmental science programmes that bring most Indian applicants here have specific science prerequisites.

  • Completed Class 12 from a recognised board for undergraduate entry, with the subject prerequisites the programme lists — chemistry and biology for biomedical science, chemistry and mathematics for much of agriculture, environmental and veterinary science.
  • A recognised bachelor's degree for postgraduate entry, with the cognate background the programme requires and weight on the final years.
  • English evidence through IELTS, TOEFL or another accepted test at the level set for the programme, which is higher for the health disciplines.
  • Complete transcripts and certificates, and a statement of purpose for most postgraduate coursework applications.
  • Academic references, a research proposal and an identified potential supervisor for research degrees.
  • Interviews, aptitude tests or evidence relating to placement and registration requirements where the programme specifies them.

Some programmes are taught wholly or partly at Gatton rather than St Lucia, so confirm both the requirement and the teaching location on the programme page.

Tuition fees

UQ charges international students per programme and bills on the courses enrolled in each semester, so the fee that applies to you is the one published against your own programme rather than a single institutional rate.

  • The faculty and discipline set the level. Biomedical and health sciences, agriculture and environmental science, engineering, business and the humanities are charged at clearly different rates.
  • Laboratory, clinical and field-based programmes are priced to reflect delivery, and agriculture, environmental and veterinary programmes also carry field trip and placement costs that sit outside tuition.
  • The teaching location affects the total cost. Programmes based at the Gatton campus involve different accommodation and travel arrangements from those at St Lucia, and that difference belongs in the budget.
  • Compulsory charges outside tuition — the student services and amenities charge, overseas student health cover for the visa period, and equipment, uniform or field costs on some programmes.
  • Indicative fees are republished each year, so a multi-year degree should be budgeted with annual increases assumed rather than at the entry-year rate.

Use the figure on your own programme page for your year of entry, alongside the university's estimate of living costs in Brisbane. We will confirm the current cost and what it includes before you commit.

Scholarships

UQ runs central international scholarships alongside faculty and school awards, with the health and behavioural sciences, science, and agriculture and food faculties each maintaining schemes of their own.

  • Central international merit awards, assessed on academic record, some considered automatically from the admission application and some requiring a separate submission.
  • Faculty and school awards tied to a discipline or a named programme, published by the faculty rather than centrally.
  • Research-linked awards attached to particular institutes and research groups, especially in biomedical and agricultural science, which is where much of the university's research funding sits.
  • Research training support for higher degree by research candidates, combining fee relief and a living stipend, allocated competitively in rounds.
  • Government-funded international programmes, applied for outside the university and on their own timetable.

For research degrees, funding is usually settled in conversation with a prospective supervisor and their institute, so approach the research group before submitting an application rather than after.

Campus life

The St Lucia campus occupies a bend in the Brisbane River a few kilometres from the city centre, a large green site with the sandstone Great Court at its middle, reached by bus, bicycle or the river ferry.

  • The subtropical climate changes how the campus is used. Much of student life happens outdoors, the year is warm and humid with a wet summer, and the riverside setting is part of the daily experience rather than a backdrop.
  • Residential colleges along the campus edge, applied for separately from your course and with their own closing dates; shared housing in the surrounding suburbs follows for most students.
  • A second campus at Gatton, west of Brisbane, which is where much of the agricultural, animal and environmental science teaching sits, with a working farm and a distinctly rural, close-knit student community.
  • A large clubs and societies scene including faculty societies, cultural and national associations, performance, volunteering and an extensive sport programme with social grades.
  • Fieldwork as a normal part of study in the environmental, marine and agricultural disciplines, including coastal and reef-adjacent sites.
  • International student support covering orientation, visa and work-rights advice, health and counselling, with active South Asian student associations.

Confirm which campus your programme is taught on before arranging accommodation. Gatton and St Lucia are not commutable from one another day to day.
