Overview
An English literature degree is training in reading closely, arguing precisely, and writing prose that carries an idea without losing it. The syllabus travels from medieval texts to contemporary and postcolonial writing, and the assessment is essays, which means the degree is also three years of coached writing practice — the skill employers actually buy from its graduates.
Ireland and Britain carry particular weight in this subject for the obvious reason that so much of the canon was written there, and studying it in Dublin or Edinburgh adds a literary geography no reading list can.
Eligibility
Entry rests on written English and evidence of reading, more than on any particular subject combination.
- Completed Class 12 with strong grades in English or a literature subject.
- English proficiency evidence, at a higher level than for most degrees — the course is reading and writing throughout.
- A personal statement that discusses specific books with an actual argument. This carries more weight here than in almost any other subject.
- A written sample requested by some selective institutions.
- An interview at a small number of universities, usually a discussion of a text.
The volume of reading is the thing applicants underestimate — several substantial works a term, every term. It is a genuine commitment and worth being honest with yourself about.
Career opportunities
A degree that qualifies you for no single job and is valued across many, provided you can articulate what it taught you.
- Publishing, editing and content — the most direct route, and competitive.
- Journalism, communications and public relations.
- Marketing and copywriting, where the writing ability is immediately commercial.
- Teaching, following a teaching qualification.
- Law, via a conversion route — literature graduates do well on it.
- Civil service, policy and the cultural sector — museums, arts organisations, libraries.
Employers hire the analysis and the writing, not the reading list. Internships and any evidence of writing for a real audience matter more here than in vocational subjects, and are worth pursuing from the first year.
Course structure
Three years moving from broad historical survey toward specialised options and independent research.
- Historical survey — medieval through to contemporary, giving the shape of the tradition.
- Genre study — poetry, drama and the novel, each with its own critical apparatus.
- Critical and literary theory, which is where the discipline's intellectual work happens.
- Postcolonial, world and comparative literature, now central rather than optional at most institutions.
- Optional modules — creative writing, film, linguistics, a single author or period.
- A final-year dissertation on a self-chosen topic.
Assessment is overwhelmingly essay-based. What the degree actually trains is the ability to build an argument from evidence and write it clearly — which is the transferable skill worth naming to employers.

Frequently asked questions
Is an English literature degree employable?
The skills it builds — reading closely, arguing in writing, handling ambiguity — are wanted in publishing, media, communications, law, teaching, policy and management.
It is not vocational, so the route to a first job usually runs through internships and evidence of writing alongside the degree.
What will I actually study?
Literature across periods and forms, alongside critical theory and the history that produced the writing. Reading loads are substantial and continuous.
Programmes differ a great deal in period coverage and in how much theory they require. The module list is the real prospectus.
Is it only English writers?
Increasingly not. Most departments now teach literature in English from across the world, and many offer translation and comparative options.
If world literature matters to you, check the department rather than assuming from the degree title.
How long is the degree?
Three to four years depending on the country, usually with a dissertation in the final year.
That dissertation is the strongest writing sample you will have when you apply for anything afterwards.
