Overview

Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin, was founded by royal charter in 1592 and is the oldest university in Ireland. Its main campus is a walled site in the centre of Dublin, which is unusual for a city-centre university and gives it a distinct sense of enclosure.

Teaching spans the arts, humanities, engineering, sciences, business, law and a full medical school with associated teaching hospitals. Its library holds the Book of Kells and operates as a legal deposit library.

Undergraduate degrees are typically four years and are specialised from the outset, though several courses now allow a broader first year and later specialisation.

Admission requirements

Entry is competitive, particularly for the health sciences and for courses with small intakes.

  • Class 12 or equivalent results at the level the course states, with subject prerequisites where they apply — mathematics and sciences for engineering and health courses in particular.
  • A recognised bachelor's degree in a related discipline for taught master's entry, at the classification the school requires.
  • English proficiency through IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or another accepted test at the published minimum, including per-section minimums.
  • A statement of purpose and two references for most postgraduate courses.
  • A portfolio, test or interview for medicine, dentistry, drama, music and certain other programmes.

Tuition fees

Trinity sets non-EU fees itself, by programme, and Dublin's accommodation cost is a larger factor in the total than most applicants expect.

  • Non-EU rates differ substantially from EU rates and are set per programme by the college.
  • Subject-based variation — laboratory, clinical and business programmes above arts and humanities.
  • A student contribution and levies in addition to tuition, covering services and the students' union.
  • Fees generally fixed for the cohort at your entry-year rate, though this should be confirmed for your programme.
  • Dublin accommodation is the dominant additional cost and has risen sharply — it deserves as much attention in the budget as the fee.

Work from Trinity's fee pages for your specific course and fee status for your specific programme and year of entry — it is the only figure that will be correct for you, and it is republished every year. We will confirm the current cost and what it includes before you commit to an application.

Scholarships

Trinity awards a set of central scholarships to international students alongside school-level awards decided within each discipline. Most are partial tuition reductions applied for after an offer, and research funding runs through supervisors and national research bodies.

  • Central international awards — partial tuition reductions on academic merit.
  • School awards — decided within a discipline, with their own criteria.
  • Research studentships — attached to a project and a supervisor.
  • Externally funded awards — administered with partner organisations.

Irish scholarship rounds are small and close early. Securing the offer quickly is what makes you eligible in time.

Campus life

A walled historic campus in the middle of Dublin, so the university is physically enclosed while the city is immediately outside the gates.

  • A single main campus in the city centre — cobbled squares, the Old Library, and everything within a few minutes' walk.
  • A very old society tradition, including debating societies among the oldest in existence, plus a wide range of clubs and sport.
  • The city centre is the campus surroundings, which makes Dublin unusually accessible for a student here.
  • Good international student support, with orientation and advising for a large non-EU cohort.
  • On-campus accommodation is limited and allocated competitively, so most students live in private rented housing.

Accommodation is the practical difficulty. Dublin has a genuine shortage and high rents, so starting the search as early as possible — and considering a longer commute — is realistic advice rather than pessimism.
