Overview
A physics master's is shaped by the research groups around it more than by its syllabus: quantum optics where there is a quantum optics institute, astrophysics where there are telescopes and survey collaborations, condensed matter where there are materials laboratories. The German and Russian traditions in theoretical physics remain formidable, and German master's programmes in particular are often taught in English within large research ecosystems.
The thesis is typically a year embedded in a group, and for students aiming at a PhD it functions as an extended audition — choose the group, not just the university.
Eligibility
A specialist master's that builds directly on an undergraduate physics degree, with little room for conversion.
- A bachelor's degree in physics or a closely related field such as engineering physics.
- Undergraduate quantum mechanics, electromagnetism and statistical mechanics — assumed knowledge, not taught again.
- Strong mathematical ability, at the level the undergraduate degree required.
- English proficiency evidence.
- A statement naming the research area, because supervision and module choice follow from it.
- Programming experience expected on most programmes; computational physics is standard.
For a research career this degree is usually a step toward a doctorate rather than a destination. Where the intention is a doctorate, the choice of research group matters as much as the institution.
Career opportunities
Physics graduates are recruited for their quantitative and modelling ability, and a large proportion end up outside physics — which is normal, not a failure.
- Doctoral study and academic research, the route for those staying in the discipline.
- Research and development in semiconductors, photonics, instrumentation and quantum technologies.
- Medical physics in hospitals, which requires its own clinical training route.
- Data science and quantitative finance, both of which recruit physicists deliberately.
- Engineering and defence research organisations.
- Scientific software and simulation.
Research physics positions are scarce relative to the number of graduates, and a doctorate is the minimum for most. Knowing that early makes the computational skills a deliberate investment rather than a fallback.
Course structure
One or two years of advanced theory plus a substantial research project, with the project frequently the more important half.
- Advanced quantum mechanics and quantum field theory on theoretical routes.
- Condensed matter and materials physics, the largest research area by volume.
- Particle, nuclear or astrophysics depending on the department's strengths.
- Computational physics — simulation, numerical methods and large-scale data analysis.
- Photonics, quantum technologies or medical physics as applied specialisms.
- A research project within a working group, often producing publishable work.
Departments differ sharply in what they can supervise. Choosing a programme for its research groups rather than its overall reputation is the single most useful decision here.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a physics degree to apply?
Yes, or a very closely related one with the mathematics behind it. Physics at master's level is not a subject that can be entered sideways.
Engineering and mathematics graduates are sometimes accepted with conditions.
Is a master's enough, or do I need a PhD?
For research roles in physics, a doctorate is usually expected. A master's is a full qualification in its own right and is often the step towards one.
Outside research, physics graduates are recruited into data, finance, engineering and technology on the strength of the analytical training.
What can I specialise in?
Condensed matter, particle and nuclear physics, astrophysics, photonics and computational physics are the common areas, and departments are strong in different ones.
Choose by the research group rather than by the university's general reputation.
How long is it?
One to two years depending on the country, with a research project that is often the basis of a doctoral application.
Pick that project as if it were the start of the PhD, because it frequently is.
