Overview

What the GRE is

The GRE, or Graduate Record Examination, is a standardised admissions test used by a large number of graduate schools, chiefly in the United States and other English-speaking countries. It measures how prepared you are for graduate-level academic work.

In the Live Class package you prepare in taught classes over 12 weeks, with access valid for 90 days.

What it covers

  • Verbal Reasoning: reading comprehension, vocabulary and critical reasoning.
  • Quantitative Reasoning: maths, interpreting data and solving problems.
  • Analytical Writing: writing essays and analysing arguments.

Why it is important

  • Many universities ask for, or accept, GRE scores for entry to master's, MBA and PhD programmes.
  • It gives admissions committees a standard way to compare applicants from varied academic and regional backgrounds.
  • High scores can strengthen your case for scholarships or teaching assistantships.
  • Certain employers and fellowships include GRE scores in their assessment.
  • Preparing for it builds the writing, reasoning and quantitative thinking you will need in graduate study.

Who should consider it

  • Students planning a master's or PhD in fields such as engineering, social sciences, natural sciences or the humanities.
  • Applicants to MBA or business school programmes that accept the GRE as an alternative to the GMAT.
  • Those who want a strong test score to add weight to their academic profile.
  • Students aiming for graduate schools overseas, particularly in the US, Canada or parts of Europe.
