Overview

Understanding the GRE

Many graduate schools, above all in the United States and other English-speaking countries, use the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) as part of admissions. This standardised test assesses how ready you are for academic work at graduate level.

With the Self Prep package you study independently, with access valid for 180 days.

Sections of the test

  • Verbal Reasoning – understanding what you read, vocabulary and critical reasoning.
  • Quantitative Reasoning – mathematical skills, data analysis and problem-solving.
  • Analytical Writing – composing essays and analysing arguments.

What a GRE score can do

  • Support your application to master's, MBA or PhD programmes at universities that require or accept it.
  • Give admissions panels a common basis for comparing applicants from diverse backgrounds and regions.
  • Help your chances of scholarships or teaching assistantships when your score is high.
  • Count in your favour with some employers and fellowships that consider it.
  • Build, through preparation, the writing, reasoning and numerical skills graduate study demands.

Who it is for

  • Future master's or PhD students in engineering, the social or natural sciences, or the humanities.
  • MBA and business school applicants where the GRE is accepted as an alternative to the GMAT.
  • Anyone looking to add a strong standardised score to their academic profile.
  • Applicants to graduate schools abroad, particularly in the US, Canada or parts of Europe.
